Community Support Worker: Assisted Living

Due to a growing and aging population there is an increasing trend towards more home-based and long-term facility care. Community Support Workers trained in Assisted Living are in high demand. This program gives you the skills to work with elderly and mentally ill clients as well as those with disabilities and chronic illness.

This multi-disciplinary, diploma program also trains you in physical care, counselling skills, developmental psychology, mental health and family studies. You will come away with a firm understanding of the Federal and Provincial social service systems. In addition, a self-care unit will provide you with the skills to revitalize and avoid burn-out.

Community Support Worker: Social Services

With the recent restructuring of the provincial social services system, the need for frontline workers is increasing. Community Support Worker graduates find themselves working with special needs children, children and adults with mental illnesses, families in crisis and with youth programs.

Our diploma program provides strong fundamentals on child, youth and adult development as well as practical skills such as counselling, teaching, parent support and applied behavioural analysis. By graduation, you will be well-informed of the Federal and Provincial social service systems.

Early Childhood Education - Basic

Upon completion of this certified and approved ECE Certificate Program, you will need to submit a photocopy of a valid First Aid certificate, official transcript, and a letter attesting to the completion of 500 hours of work experience to the Early Childhood Educator (ECE) Registry in order to gain their license as an Early Childhood Educator.

Pharmacy Technician

As a Pharmacy Technician you will discover employment doors open in various community pharmacies throughout Canada and overseas. In this program, you will learn to dispense, assist in bulk compounding functions, maintain inventory, enter sociological data and assist with customer service. The program includes courses in medical terminology, drug classifications and body systems. Your training will assist you in preparing for this exciting career.

Practical Nursing

Practical Nursing is fast becoming one of the most necessary careers in the province of BC. The competencies required for a Practical Nurse are validated by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of British Columbia (CLPN) and are an integral part of the curriculum and practicums. Throughout this three-semester diploma program, you will learn the full range of competencies in pharmacology and medication administration. The program also includes three practicums, one at the end of each semester. Finally, a five-week Preceptorship follows the successful completion of all semesters.

NOTE: Successful completion of this program does not guarantee a license to practice. That license is issued by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of B.C. only after successful completion of the mandatory national examination. WHMIS will be completed in Semester One.

The Practical Nursing Access Diploma is an accelerated program for those who have already graduated from a recognized Resident Care Attendant program and have been working in the healthcare field. Throughout this program, you will learn the full range of competencies in pharmacology and medication administration and will be provided with the opportunity to integrate the six dimensions of health; mental, physical, spiritual, psychological, social and emotional.

Resident Care Attendant

Resident Care Attendants (also called Long-Term Care Aides, Orderlies, Geriatric Aides and Healthcare Workers) represent a large and growing job group. The inclusion of a community training home support section in this program is valuable because this area of care has a high employment rate for Sprott-Shaw graduates.

With this program you can provide all aspects of personal care to patients in nursing homes, extended care facilities, rehabilitation centres, hospitals and community health agencies. As a worker in this field, you would require good physical health, stamina and a genuine desire to be a caregiver. Patience, understanding, emotional stability, dependability and team spirit are all traits that can help you excel as a Resident Care Attendant.

Combine multi-level care giving skills with business office applications now required by most care facilities. This double diploma program specializes in computer and accounting skills, business administration, resident and long-term care and supervised clinical training in care facilities.  Spa Therapy 

If your passion is to work in an environment with the purpose of providing clients with lifestyle improvement and health enhancement through professionally administered spa services, then consider a career in the spa and wellness industry. Along with an academic study of general anatomy, and physiology, students will be provided with a detailed hands-on study of human anatomy, general pathology, nutrition, therapeutic exercise and hygiene. The clinical portion of this diploma program will allow the student an opportunity to practice Swedish massage techniques as well as spa-hydrotherapy treatments. The skills you learn in this program will open career prospects within day spa, resort/hotel spa, destination spa, medical spa, club spa, mineral springs spa, cruise ship spa and others.
