Tips for Writing an Effective Resume

Your resume is an important element to your job hunt. It is important that your resume be well-written and professional. While nothing can substitute discussing your resume with your campus Graduate Services Representative, the following tips can help make creating your resume simpler.

  • Include your name and all contact information on every page.
  • Make sure that any phone number provided has a professional sounding voicemail or an answering machine attached, so that potential employers can leave a message.
  • Keep your resume updated with current information, including updated references on hand as they may be requested by a potential employer. Ensure those references agree to be a reference for you and you know what they will say to an employer.
  • Maintain a professional 'feel': do not use slang; be clear on your career objectives, what are you applying for, and what you can bring to the role for which you are applying.
  • Proofread: spell check on your computer will not catch grammatical errors, nor will it catch when a properly spelled word is used in the inappropriate context.
  • Ensure that all information is completely accurate, never lie on your resume.
  • Discuss your resume with your GSR, as they are best equipped to critique and help you improve this very important document.
