This will be our first year entering this community event and we can’t be more excited. It will be held tomorrow, Saturday, May 26 and will start at 11:00 am.

We are happy to be entering our Sprott-Shaw car in the parade and showcasing our amazing staff. We will be blasting our music and interacting with the community. Our staff and current New Westminster students will be handing out packages, balloons, and other cool things.

rbrs 0172 300x199 National Nursing WeekSunday, May 6th was the beginning of National Nursing Week! It is meant to “emphasize the profession’s accomplishments as a discipline”. Sprott-Shaw would like to extend our gratitude to all the BC Nurses for their hard work within our communities!

Nurses recognition started off in “1971, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) designated May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday, International Nurses Day.” Then it turned into a celebratory week in “1985 to highlight nurses’ contributions to the well-being of the Canadian public.”

Have a Heart Radiothon 2012

527544 10150766836608610 510843609 9567572 1397564292 n 300x225 Have a Heart Radiothon 2012Our Kelowna campus recently participated in the “Have a Heart Radiothon” 2012! This is the 5th year the campus has participated in this community event and they broke all the records!

17 students showed in the morning and with smiles on their faces, they endured heavy rainfall for 2 hours and still raised $1550. The afternoon shift consisted of 25 volunteers and they raised over $2300 in two hours. That was the most volunteers the Kelowna campus as ever had for this event. Sprott-Shaw also contributed $500 making an over all contribution of $4350.

Shows like Grey’s Anatomy and ER have pushed medical professions into the spotlight. Although they tend to mainly focus on doctors, making their professions appear more exciting and others mundane in contrast. Are Nurses actually waiting in the background and doing basic tasks like they do on TV?

Fast-Track to Self-Employment BootCamp

Sprott-Shaw is proud to announce the Fast-Track to Self-Employment BootCamp. This workshop is designed to take individuals from working as employees to working as self-employed contractors and business owners. With the ever changing demands of the new economy many individuals are opting to direct and control their careers through self-employment. The course will assist in bridging to self-employment and fully understand what is necessary. The program will cover such topics as market research, understanding industries, identifying opportunities in learner-specific fields of interest, developing and describing a business concept, marketing for self-employed, navigating legal and regulatory requirements, assessing the competition, knowing what customers want, bookkeeping, accounting, taxation, social network marketing, business communications, and understanding labour markets.

Participants will leave the workshop with a basic understanding of what it means to own and operate a small business in the 21st century, how to start a small business, and how to get contracts and keep busy as an independent, self-employed contractor.

ECE Field Trip to Maplewood Farms

The New Westminster campus ECE class recently went on a field trip to the Maplewood Farm in North Vancouver. This is an animal farm where Day Care Centres and schools take their children to experience animals in interactive setting. Our students learn and observe how children interact with animals. There was a cow milking demonstration where children experience how cows are milked and are able to pet the cow and feel the warm of the bucket of milk the cow produced.
