What is Orange Shirt Day?

September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to recognize the survivors of Canada’s Residential Schools and to honour the children who never returned home. This day coincides with Orange Shirt Day, an Indigenous-led commemorative day to raise awareness of the painful truths about Residential Schools and the lasting impact they have had on Indigenous individuals and communities.

On September 30, we wear orange shirts to honour the story of Phyllis Webstad, a Residential School survivor who had her shiny new orange shirt removed and taken away on her first day at a Residential School when she was just six years old. By wearing orange shirts, we acknowledge the past and reaffirm that the truth matters. Click here to learn more about Phyliss’s story.
