  • This course serves as an introduction to the Canadian legal system. Students will explore the history and development of law in Canada as a basis for understanding the key features of our bijural legal system. Topics include an introduction to the nature of law, the sources of law, the legal system, the court system, the legal professions, the Canadian Constitution, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and methods of analysis. Special attention will be paid to the distribution of legal authority. To that end, students will examine the executive, legislative and judicial branches of the Canadian government and the roles they play in making, enforcing, and interpreting the law.
