​Practicum Information

The TESOL Advanced Online Practicum consists of a minimum 20 hours and is broken down into the following:

  • 10 observation hours – trainees observe and assist the sponsor teachers in the ESL classroom as well as complete the observation tasks (info to come)
  • 10 supervised teaching hours – trainees instruct in an adult ESL classroom, observed and graded by their sponsor teacher

TESL Canada approved practicums must be in a classroom with:

  • a minimum of 80% of students aged 18 years of age or older
  • a minimum of 5 registered students in an ongoing ESL program

Sponsor Teacher Qualifications

The sponsor teachers must be qualified at a minimum of:

  • TESL Canada Professional Certificate Standard One, Two or Three [Permanent] or CELTA
  • at least 2,000 hours of experience in an adult ESL/EFL classroom

Practicum Placement Requirements

Trainees who have not upheld professional standards during the online module of the program can be deemed ineligible for the practicum at the discretion of the TESOL Advanced Online Program Coordinator and instructors. Trainees significantly disrupting the practicum process or not following the campus rules will be removed from the practicum program, thus ineligible to graduate from the program. Trainees are expected to maintain a grade of 70% or above throughout the practicum. Students who fall behind this mark will be advised of this and if no improvement is made may be asked to withdraw from the practicum.​
