What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?
Before attending Sprott Shaw, I had previously gone to another college to complete my Criminal Justice Certificate. After graduating from that school, I felt like there was something else I was meant to do, and that’s when I came to Sprott Shaw.
Why did you choose Sprott Shaw College?
I chose Sprott Shaw for several reasons. At the time, the location was very convenient for me, I had heard a lot of positive feedback from people and seen positive reviews online, and the program included many more courses than what other schools offered.
How was the admissions process?
The admissions process was very simple for me. Everything was clear and everyone was super helpful.
What program did you choose and why?
I chose the Education Assistant program because I had always considered a career in this field, driven by my love for working with children. I am deeply passionate about helping children thrive in various environments, and this program offered me the perfect opportunity to pursue that passion.
What was the environment like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?
The environment at Sprott Shaw was very welcoming. I always felt like I could ask anyone for help if I needed, and there was never a time where I felt uncomfortable.
Where was your practicum or co-op and how was it?
My practicum was at Colleen & Gordie Howe Middle School in Abbotsford. Naturally, I was very nervous to start, but looking back, it exceeded my expectations. Every day, I shadowed a Educational Assistant (EA) who worked with two girls in grade 6. Forming connections was incredibly important to me, and this school provided the perfect environment for that. I have nothing negative to say about my practicum; it was incredibly helpful in preparing me to work as an EA independently.
How long did it take you to find a job after graduation?
It took me less than a week to transition. My practicum ended on a Friday, and by the following Monday, I was starting my job. Initially, I was concerned that ending my practicum in June might delay starting my career in this field. However, I applied for a position as an Early Childhood Education Assistant at a daycare and worked there for 8 months before transitioning to the school district.
Where do you work? Can you explain your duties?
I currently work as a Education Assistant with the Langley School District. As a casual employee, I work across multiple schools each week rather than being assigned to one specific school. Consequently, my duties vary depending on the school and grade level I am supporting. However, my main responsibilities include assisting in educational assessments for exceptional students, working in complex resource rooms and mainstream academic settings, monitoring progress with reference to Individualized Education Plans (IEP), modifying programs as necessary, and collaborating with teachers to support students in their classrooms, particularly those facing extra challenges or diverse learning needs.
If you could give advice to someone coming to Sprott Shaw, what would you say?
My advice would be not to worry but to be excited about this next chapter in your life.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
I would like to emphasize that my time at Sprott Shaw wouldn’t have been the same without my amazing professor, Sharla Hardie. Her support and encouragement made me feel excited and confident about entering this career. ‘Thank you’ will never be enough.
