What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?
Before attending Sprott Shaw College, I worked in Human Resources for many years. After having my second child, I decided it was the right time to pursue my passion for Early Childhood Education and begin a new career in the field.
Why did you choose Sprott Shaw College?
I chose Sprott Shaw College because it had a good reputation, offered a flexible program (online courses), and allowed me to balance my family responsibilities while studying.
How was the admissions process?
The admissions process was smooth and straightforward. The staff were friendly, answered all my questions, and made everything easy to understand.
What program did you choose and why?
I chose the Early Childhood Education program because I enjoy working with children and wanted to build the knowledge and skills needed to support their learning and development.
What was the environment like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?
The learning environment was supportive and encouraging. My instructors were knowledgeable, approachable, and always willing to help. They provided valuable guidance throughout both my coursework and practicum experience.
Where was your practicum or co-op and how was it?
I completed my practicums at three different childcare centres. Each placement gave me a unique learning experience and helped me understand different teaching approaches and classroom environments. It was a valuable opportunity to apply what I learned in class.
How long did it take you to find a job after graduation?
I was fortunate to receive job opportunities before completing my program, thanks to the experience I gained during my practicums.
Where do you work? Can you explain your duties?
I am currently working as an Early Childhood Educator. My responsibilities include planning and implementing engaging activities, supporting children’s learning and development, creating a safe and nurturing environment, and collaborating closely with families and fellow educators.
If you could give advice to someone coming to Sprott Shaw, what would you say?
Be open to learning, ask questions, and make the most of your practicum experiences. They provide some of the best opportunities to build confidence, develop your skills, and gain real-world experience.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
I would like to thank my practicum instructor, Elise Drapak, for her guidance and encouragement throughout my practicum. She was always supportive, took the time to answer my questions, and genuinely cared about her students’ success. Her knowledge and positive attitude gave me the confidence to develop my skills as an Early Childhood Educator. I am also grateful to all my instructors at Sprott Shaw College for making my learning experience both enjoyable and rewarding.
