Have you ever wanted to be a Dental Assistant? To start your journey towards becoming a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA), you can take the Dental Assistant Program at Sprott Shaw College.
Our Dental Assistant Program includes hands-on learning and skills training at our brand-new dental lab. To learn more about our dental lab and what practical learning features it has, keep on reading!
What Skills Can I Learn in Sprott Shaw’s Dental Lab?
Sprott Shaw’s Dental Assistant Program includes both theory and clinical components. As a Dental Assistant student, you will be able to practice all the skills, processes, techniques, and procedures that you learn throughout the course in the lab.
Students will have access to our dental clinic and lab, which includes operatories, mannequins, x-ray machines, and more. In the clinic and lab, in addition to learning new skills and procedures, students will also have the opportunity to continuously practise their skills until they feel confident in their work. A few skills and procedures students will be able to practice in the lab include infection control, instrument recirculation, sterilization, oral hygiene instruction, patient care and education, pit and fissure sealants, polishing and providing fluoride for teeth, and much more. Moreover, students will also be able to take impressions and make and trim the completed models.
What Features Does the Dental Lab Have?
Sprott Shaw’s dental lab has two separate rooms – a clinic and a lab.
The lab is a spacious learning centre with ample sink and counter space for students to practice dental procedures in. In the lab, students can learn to take impressions for dental models that can be used to fabricate mouth guards and whitening trays.
In another room, the clinic serves as a fully functioning dental office for students to learn and apply what they know on real patients. In the clinic, students will have access to fully functioning operatories, radiography equipment, and x-ray machines for real patients who can come in to receive dental procedures and services.
What Are the Benefits of Sprott Shaw’s Dental Lab?
At Sprott Shaw, our dental lab is built entirely with brand-new digital and state-of-the-art technology that helps students know and understand what it would be like to work in a practicing dental office.
Sprott Shaw’s Dental Assistant Program also includes over 540 hours of clinical and practicum experience so students can familiarize themselves with the field before graduation.
Throughout the program, students will be able to apply their dental skills not only on themselves and their classmates, but also on their friends and family. At the end of the program, students will have the opportunity to invite their friends and family to be a patient at the dental lab.
In addition to their close circle, as part of their clinical placement, students will be able to offer dental care to real patients who come into Sprott Shaw’s fully functioning dental clinic. Through this experience, they will be able to demonstrate all of the skills they’ve learned on the patients.
In their practicum, students will have the opportunity to work in dental centres at corporate offices and independent offices across British Columbia.
