Success Story

I’ve wanted to work in healthcare for as long as I can remember. I was a candy striper back in grade 9 and took all the classes I could in high school so I could achieve my goal. Shortly after graduating I made a very last-minute decision of starting the Health Care Assistant program at Sprott Shaw College. My classmates and I got so close so quick. We were like one big family, and we had the BEST instructor who pushed us and believed us, she made the class extra fun. After 5 months in the classroom, practicum finally came, my favourite part of the program. I could not have asked for better instructors, Rina and Karen were absolutely amazing. They made us think and helped us learn quicker, I’ll always be so thankful for them. After I finished practicum I gave out two resumes to my top employer choices. I was called in for an interview and hired at Eden Gardens within two days, and almost like clockwork, as soon as I finished my orientation at Eden Gardens I was called for an interview and immediately offered a position at Kiwanis Village. I feel very fortunate as both are Island Health residential care facilities. Sprott Shaw College prepared me so well for interviewing that both interviews were a breeze, I was complimented on my organization and reference choices. I am now getting full-time hours between the two jobs and could not be happier, I feel as if I have a purpose. I absolutely love what I do and I’m so glad I got my foot in the door and am now positive that I can pursue my dream of becoming a nurse.
