Success Story: Olivia Thoresen, Early Childhood Educator

What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?

Before enrolling, I was babysitting for a friend while exploring my career options and looking for a meaningful path working with children.

Why did you choose Sprott Shaw College?

I chose Sprott Shaw College because I needed an online learning option, and they offered the courses I was looking for. I decided to take a chance and see where it would lead me, and so far, it has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

How was the admissions process?

The admissions process was easy and quick.

What program did you choose and why?

I chose the Early Childhood Education program because it has always been my dream to work with children. My long-term goal is to open my own daycare and provide the best possible support to children and their families. Having grown up around children and spent years caring for and helping them, I knew this was the right career path for me.

What was the environment like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?

I completed most of my coursework online, with the exception of my practicums. Whenever I needed support, the campus was amazing, and the staff were always wonderful, welcoming, and helpful throughout my journey.

Where was your practicum or co-op and how was it?

My Praticums where in Duncan and I’ve definitely had my fair share of placemats but my last one was amazing and they definitely showed me the ropes and the way to go in this world and how things are done.

How long did it take you to find a job after graduation?

I found my job just before graduating. Knowing that I was close to completing my Early Childhood Education certification, I started applying for positions and was excited when an opportunity came up. I went through the interview process, was offered the position, and happily accepted it.

Where do you work? Can you explain your duties?

I will be working with infants and toddlers in the beautiful Cowichan Valley, which is my favourite age group to work with. I’m excited to begin my career doing what I love and supporting children during such an important stage of their development.

If you could give advice to someone coming to Sprott Shaw, what would you say?

I would encourage anyone considering college to go for it. Give it a try, advocate for yourself, push beyond your limits, and make the most of the experience. Sprott Shaw supported me every step of the way.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I just want to say it’s because of my amazing instructor that I was able to graduate and do everything I dreamed of.
