Success Story: Jiwon, Early Childhood Educator

What is your nationality?
South Korea

What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?
I worked as a server at a restaurant.

Why did you choose Sprott Shaw College?
I wanted to pursue a stable career in Vancouver.

How was the admissions process?
I applied through an immigration agency, which helped me with the admissions process and required documents. It was straightforward and smooth.

What program did you choose and why?
I chose the Early Childhood Education program because I’ve always enjoyed working with children and wanted to build a career in childcare. I also wanted to learn more about child development and how to support children in a meaningful way.

What was the environment like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?
I really enjoyed the environment at Sprott Shaw College, especially because of my instructor, Elena Kropova. Even though getting to early morning classes was sometimes challenging, she always encouraged and supported me. She also did a great job leading the class when things became a little chaotic. I appreciated her patience and positive attitude, and she made the learning experience very enjoyable.

Where was your practicum or co-op, and how was it?
I completed my practicum at three different childcare centres: First Avenue Montessori Daycare, Alison’s Daycare, and Shaughnessy Preschool. Each centre provided a unique learning experience, and I enjoyed observing different teaching styles and environments.

I especially enjoyed my time at Alison’s Daycare. It was one of the best childcare centres I’ve experienced in Vancouver. The environment was warm and well-organized, and I was impressed by how the educators interacted with the children. It gave me valuable insight into what a high-quality childcare environment looks like.

How long did it take you to find a job after graduation?
About three weeks.

Where do you work? Can you explain your duties?
I’m still figuring out where I’d like to work long-term, but I’m currently working as an on-call teacher.

If you could give advice to someone coming to Sprott Shaw, what would you say?
If possible, I would recommend obtaining permanent residency before starting school. Studying in Canada as an international student can be expensive, so having permanent residency can make things much more manageable. Other than that, make the most of your time at Sprott Shaw and build strong relationships with your instructors and classmates.
