Success Story: Angelina Dodd, Health Care Assistant

What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?

I was a hairstylist. I took a trades course during high school and graduated early. I was working in a few different salons and barbershops.

Why did you choose Sprott Shaw College?

I chose Sprott Shaw because my friend could see I wasn’t enjoying being a hairstylist anymore and said I would be great at being an HCA. They recommended this program to me.

How was the admissions process?

The admissions process was easier than I thought. My advisor was fantastic. She got me into the earliest available class, which started the following week.

What program did you choose and why?

I chose the HCA program because of my friend and because I wanted to help others and be the person who advocates for them, is their companion, and takes care of them.

What was the environment like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?

The environment was fantastic. I loved my teacher, Debra Hole. She made the lessons so much more engaging, explained things in ways that I understood, and helped me reach my goals.

Where was your practicum or co-op and how was it?

My practicum was also amazing. I was placed at Bevan Seniors Living, and I ran the entire first floor (assisted living) by myself. I had a routine that made me more time-conscious, and I built great resident-worker relationships.

How long did it take you to find a job after graduation?

It took me over a month to find a job.

Where do you work? Can you explain your duties?

I work at a small home care company called Supportify Homecare. I go to different houses, and it is mainly companion visits and some light house cleaning. We go out to lunch, have tea, chat, go for walks, and do a bunch of different tasks depending on the client.

If you could give advice to someone coming to Sprott Shaw, what would you say?

I would say studying will be your best friend in this program. It is a lot of information every two weeks. Take notes and ask questions because, odds are, the teacher will explain it further, word it differently, and you will understand.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I really enjoyed having Debra as my teacher. She was one of my favourite teachers throughout all my years of schooling.
