What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?
I was a stay-at-home mom.
Why did you choose Sprott Shaw College?
Local campus, condensed program, and lots and lots of help from the staff when I inquired!
How was the admissions process?
Fantastic. Actually, I originally went in for a meeting with the advisor to discuss the administrative programs! But then, we had such a great talk where she really encouraged me to think about what I really wanted to do, and what my passions are, that when she presented me with the Early Childhood Education (ECE) program, I couldn’t believe I had never thought of that as a career before! I wouldn’t be where I am today without that conversation. Literally, life changing.
What program did you choose and why?
I ended up going with the ECE program because of that conversation with the advisor. I had wanted to be a teacher when I was younger, and had given up on that dream over the years. She showed me how streamlined the program was and explained how much help I would get finding a career after the program, and it just felt perfect.
What was the environment like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?
So friendly and comfortable. I was worried that at 35 I would be out of place or overwhelmed by the change in technology, but my worries couldn’t have been further from the actual experience. I had help every step of the way. Alicia helped so much with my finances, Aman was incredible at helping me learn all the new technology I would need to be successful, Melissa is so kind and great with administrative help, and the people in my class were lovely and enthusiastic. Everyone there is so welcoming and helpful.
Where was your practicum or co-op and how was it?
I did my practicum at a centre with multiple locations and was able to practice at 2 different locations. It was incredible, and I work there now. 🙂
How long did it take you to find a job after graduation?
I was hired on my last day of practicum!
Where do you work? Can you explain your duties?
I work at Imagination Station Childcare Centre, Kanaka location in Maple Ridge. I am a full-time preschool teacher, and help in the infant-toddler program and after school care program where required.
If you could give advice to someone coming to Sprott Shaw, what would you say?
Take FULL advantage of the opportunities available to you at school! There is a wealth of knowledge in every department, and they want nothing more than to see you succeed. Use them!! And never stop asking questions. Great discussions and learning opportunities come not just from the course materials, they come from the wealth of knowledge and experience your teachers have to offer! They have been where you want to be let them help you!
Is there anything else you would like to share?
The Early Childhood Education program at this campus is phenomenal. The instructor, Gail, is supportive, patient, and generous with her time and experience. Some of the classes are challenging, but Gail works hard to break everything down so each student is fully supported in reaching their potential. She uses hands-on examples and assignments that encourage you to reach a deeper understanding of the material and practical experiences to ensure each student is capable and confident applying the material to their practice in the real world.
She is so passionate about the knowledgeable, caring practice of childcare and it is contagious! For anyone who hopes to have a career as an educator, and to feel like the work they do has value and contributes to the healthy education of young children, this is the place to be! You will finish your program feeling prepared, supported, and ready to move into this career. The campus itself is great, it is small and comfortable with lots of one-on-one support with fantastic and knowledgeable staff, from finances and loans to resume and career prep, they will help you from day one until you land the job you want! I am so happy I made the decision to attend, and a year and a bit later, I have a career I love. Highly, highly recommend!
