Kylie MacNeill, Practical Nursing

What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?

I was a stay at home mom, just finishing high school.

How has your career progressed since graduating?

I’ve had the opportunity to work in acute care on medical-surgical floors, in special care Geriatric psychiatric units, and in complex care facilities.

I’ve grown as a professional and as a strong-minded individual throughout my experiences collectively at each facility. I’ve also learned from nurses who have been doing this role before I walked the earth. I’ve learned from patients and families about compassion and accountability. Right now, I’m turning my interests towards continuing my education and I am looking forward to more growth and opportunities.

Would you recommend Sprott Shaw College to your friends and family? Why?

It all started for me when I enrolled in this college. By that I mean, life started. The supportive environment at Sprott Shaw drove me through the nursing program and inspired me to strive for educational excellence. The instructors were really patient and did everything in their power to ensure every student’s success.

How did Sprott Shaw change your life?

I’ve now been nursing for 6 years. I love the job more today now than I ever have. My education really prepared me for a collaborative, fast-paced work environment.

I was a teenage, single parent, high school drop out with no future to hope for a year before I started the nursing program. When I realized that there was a college that was geared towards my needs that I could potentially be accepted into, I began the necessary upgrades to qualify for acceptance.

It was the best decision I ever made. I now solely support myself and my three beautiful children. We aren’t rich but we don’t want anything. There’s nothing more empowering than being able to say I can take care of myself and my family thanks to the hard work and dedication I’ve put to the career of my dreams.
