What Is the ICP?
Sprott Shaw’s Instructor Competency Program is a suite of courses that will sharpen your instructional skills, help you inspire your students to even greater levels of performance, and guide you toward more efficient work practices. It includes the following courses:

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

ICP100 – Supporting the Adult Learner

The Supporting the Adult Learner course is the first course in the Sprott Shaw Instructor Competency Program (ICP). It is a prerequisite for all other courses as it introduces participants to the theory and principles of adult learning and the characteristics and demographics of adult learners. These key elements will be discussed as they apply to planning, teaching and learning and in creating a positive learning environment. In addition, participants will develop skills related to reflective practice and communication. This course is 100% online.

ICP 110 – Lesson and Activity Plans

The Lesson and Activity Plans course is part of the Sprott Shaw Instructor Competency Program. This course introduces participants to the principles of how to plan effective instruction. Participants will learn how to create a lesson and activity plan that is based on fundamental adult learning principles, and incorporates a variety of instructional techniques and media. These key elements will be discussed as they apply to creating measurable learning and performance. This course is 100% online.

ICP120 – Using Microsoft Suite Effectively

An introduction to the fundamentals of Microsoft Suite software and how to use it effectively in lesson plan preparation and presentation, to maintain accurate student records, and to manage time using e-mail / appointments / task lists. This course is 100% online.

Note: ICP120-Using Microsoft Suite Effectively is a prerequisite to ICP 140-Instructional Technology and Media.

ICP120 – Challenge Exam

ICP120 is the only course in the ICP program that can be challenged. This 3 hour exam will test your ability to use MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

ICP130 – Foundations of Evaluation

The Foundations of Evaluation course is the third course in the Sprott-Shaw Instructor Competency Program. This course introduces participants to the principles and methods of student evaluation. Participants will learn how to integrate evaluation into an overall learning plan through the development formal and informal assessment tools for classroom, distance and online learning, and to analyze evaluation data. These key elements will be discussed as they apply to creating measurable learning. This course is 100% online.

ICP140 – Instructional Technology and Media

This course introduces participants to the broad range of instructional technologies used in educational institutions. In this course, participants will also learn how to create lessons using different instructional technologies. Participants will have the opportunity to work within a Learning Management System (LMS) to create a range of learning activities, using different technologies. Upon completion, participants will be able to design instructional activities that incorporate technology for a wide range of learners.

This course is 100% online.

ICP150 – Practical Classroom Guide

This course is intended to provide instructors with practical advice in addressing classroom situations and challenges. This course is 100% online.

Course Schedules:
For Asynchronous Discussion Forum, there is no scheduled time to meet. The duration will be your working time for that week. A scheduled meeting time for synchronous online classes will be given.

An orientation for using WebEx (for synchronous discussion forums) will be scheduled at a minimum of 1 week prior to the first day of classes.

  • Successful completion of ICP 100-Supporting the Adult Learner, or permission from your instructor.
  • Professional Development Tuition Request Form (DFS)
