Adrienne LeGuyder, Medical Office Administration

What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?

I was a stay at home mom for over 9 years.

Why did you choose Sprott Shaw College?

The flexible schedule allowed me to work within my children’s school routine. The friendly staff, small and hands-on classroom environment, and close proximity to home are some of the top reasons I choose Sprott Shaw.

How was the admissions process?

Karen Moon, my advisor, was amazing! She has such a wealth of knowledge and is very passionate about her job and campus. Any questions or concerns I had were addressed with respect and empathy.

What program did you choose and why?

I chose the Medical Office Assistant (MOA) Program because I already had over 15 years of experience as an office administrator/receptionist. This made going back to school at 50 years old not seem so overwhelming as I already had some of the basic office skills under my belt.

Vancouver Island has a very strong medical workforce and popular retirement destination so it made sense to add that component to my skill set.

What was the environment like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?

Everyone I met at Sprott Shaw was like my extended family – all the staff are encouraging and friendly. I always felt safe and welcomed, even by the teachers I didn’t have. Making friends was also easier than I anticipated. I look forward to the newfound connections for many years to come.

If you could give advice to someone coming to Sprott Shaw, what would you say?

Put whatever fears or concerns you have out of your mind. The staff are there to guide and nurture you all the way. Even on days when you feel it’s not possible to do anything right, there is someone there to lift you up and encourage you to be the best that you can.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

Thank you, Nanaimo Campus. The knowledgeable Ms. Lana, the smiley Ms. Kari, the bubbly Ms. Moon, the witty Mr. Tyler, the hip Ms. Michelle, and last but not least, the lovely Ms. Cora. You all made my experience a positive one. Although I didn’t have faith in myself, you all did and made me a more confident and determined woman.
