What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?

I worked as an early childhood educator assistant.

Why did you choose Sprott Shaw College?

I decided on Sprott Shaw because it offers the chance for me to work and study online.

How was the admissions process?

My advisor Jacque Christie at Sprott Shaw Kamloops helped me every step of the way, so it went really well for me.

What program did you choose and why?

I chose early childhood education since I have a lot of experience working with children ages 3-5 as a certified Montessori teacher and early childhood assistant.

What was the environment like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?

I found that the online learning environment for my early childhood education course was adaptable, providing opportunities for independent study, real-time online collaboration with peers, and access to a wide range of resources. For me as a mother, juggling work, online coursework, and family came naturally.

Where was your practicum or co-op and how was it?

I completed three practicums for two childcare facilities in Kamloops area. Everything went well, with the exception that my practicum coordinator did not follow up with me very often.

How long did it take you to find a job after graduation?

Due to my experience in the field of early childhood education, I had no trouble finding employment in this field. Working with children is something I enjoy doing, so I am into it.

Where do you work? Can you explain your duties?

I am employed as a lead early childhood educator somewhere in the town. My duties are: Plan and carry out age-appropriate lesson plans and activities, establish a secure, supportive, and nurturing learning environment, observe and evaluate the growth and development of children, inform parents about their child’s development on a regular basis, work together with coworkers and support personnel, keep track of documents and records pertaining tot he development of children, attend opportunities for professional development to stay current on best practices, verify adherence to licensing requirements and specifications.

If you could give advice to someone coming to Sprott Shaw, what would you say?

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have Jasmine Nacionales as our online instructor. She supported us at every turn. Though it was not perfect, I would say that I had the best time at Sprott Shaw. The key is to be proactive in your studies, interact with instructors and classmates, make use of the resources that are available, and remain dedicated to your objectives.
