students returning to campus

Sprott Shaw College programs are moving back on campus. Here is why, and what we’ve learned about online learning vs classroom learning.

(Click here to jump to the Frequently Asked Questions.)

Sprott Shaw College has made the decision to return to regular operations after careful considerations. This means that our program offerings will be returning, primarily, to in-person and on-campus instruction.

While Sprott Shaw will continue to offer some online programs, and courses with online components where feasible, we strongly believe that the true value we offer our students comes from the hands-on training that creates job-ready graduates.

Sprott Shaw utilized online learning solutions, or eLearning, to accommodate the realities of the global COVID-19 pandemic. While there are many benefits of an online component for instruction, such as in hybrid or blended learning scenarios, the intrinsic value of hands-on training and practice simply cannot be reproduced in an online environment.

In the end, some things are simply better taught in person.

Sprott Shaw will continue to closely follow the federal guidelines for pandemic safety and will adjust based on current conditions. You can find more details on our COVID-19 Updates and Information page.

Sprott Shaw College will continue to offer some online learning of our programs through synchronous WebEx delivery.

WebEx is a video conferencing platform that allows us to maintain remote “face-to-face” structured classes that are 100% instructor-led. These virtual classes create an interactive learning experience for our students in the safety and security of their own homes.

Our smaller WebEx class sizes offer you more attention and support from our instructors and allow us to maintain the high quality of education we have strived for over the last 117 years.

While life may not always go as planned, you shouldn’t let that stop you from pursuing your career goals. From our new online admissions process to our online learning curriculum, you can stay on track, and move forward with your education.

The Value Of Hands-On Classroom Learning

At Sprott Shaw College we take pride in the success of our students and we are committed to maintaining the job-ready education that has been Sprott Shaw’s hallmark for over 100 years.

Our smaller class sizes, qualified and on-the-job experienced instructors, hands-on training, and an open and welcoming learning environment are essential elements to the success of our students across all of our programs.

While we have found ways to close the gaps during this period when being together face-to-face was not feasible, it was always our intention to return to the campus and classroom setting that allows us to deliver the value that both our students and their future employers expect.

What our students are saying…

“WebEx is a great way to do class from the comfort and safety of our homes. While we are self isolating, it is so nice to see my instructor and classmates and have that social connection. It has been a perfect way to lift my spirits and give me a mental health boost.  I find that it’s easy to learn still and we have all strengthened our communication skills using this format. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to be involved in the Webex classes.”

Jessica, Penticton Campus Student

“My experience with online learning has been great so far. [My Instructor] makes online learning as close to an actual class with fun activities like crazy hair and hoodie days. She makes sure everyone contribute in class and no one feels left out. She encourages questions and answers them right away. When I’m having a problem connecting to Webex or other web sites that we use, I email her and she responds right away. I think my instructor’s hard work and effort has helped make this online experience enjoyable.”

While both alternative learning methods are on WebEx, they aren’t exactly the same.

Asynchronous WebEx Delivery is self-paced learning and essentially, not live. You don’t need to log in at the same time everyday and you can learn at your own pace.

On the other hand, Synchronous WebEx Delivery is not self-paced. With this, you will need to log in at the same time everyday and mark your attendance.
